505 - I may never go back to pins!!

For this quilt I used invisible pins.

I finished the piecing on my Liberty Bloomsbury Gardens quilt last week, but waited until the weekend to put the quilt sandwich together, because I wanted to try out spray basting rather then using pins for a change. I decided to give spray adhesives a go for a couple of reasons - firstly we don't have any hard floors (apart from in the bathroom) and I've found that no matter how careful I am, or however many pins I use, I keep getting small areas on the back of my quilt where the fabric pleats as I quilt. Incredibly annoying, and usually resulting in much wailing and gnashing of teeth. Secondly, who likes crawling about on their knees pinning a quilt?? I'd bought a small can of the 505 quilters basting spray a while ago, and while looking at instructions on other peoples blogs, did see that some people thought spray baste didn't work as well on man made fibres, as opposed to cotton batting. All I had in was my usual, soft and bright - which is a needled polyester wadding - but I decided to try anyway. It is true, by the way, it doesn't stick as well to polyester fibres - but it did stick well enough to be able to FMQ without ANY pins. Not one. See the picture above? No pins!

The benefit of this method is speed, pure and simple. It was quick and easy to spray baste and not having to stop free motion quilting to remove pins was a dream. I really can't understate the time saved - I can't believe it myself but I've probably halved my quilting time. The only niggle I have is that the white fabrics seem to have picked up lint and dust, probably from the sticky solvent, so after binding this quilt will immediately need washing. I think on the balance of things, it's a small price to pay. Oh, did I mention that there are no puckers in the back?!?
 I've ordered some cotton batting for my next quilt project (I have a stack of Kaffe Fassett fabrics waiting, and I'd like to try a quilt without any white. Angst!)

So, I just need to get this sucker bound this evening, and I can't start my next project!

Lastly I just had to show off these crochet snowflakes, they're so pretty - and made by non other then my dad!
